What is Reiki?
“Reiki is a Japanese technique and is a form of alternative holistic medicine called energy healing. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a “universal energy” is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing”. – Wikipedia
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”
Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.
Reiki is a simple, natural and a safe method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It is a complementary approach that can work in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Please note guidance should be sought from a medical practitioner.
The ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student. This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki Master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. Reiki is not dependent on belief and will work whether you believe in it or not. It is important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one should practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony.
Mikao created the 5 principles of Reiki, which can be used as daily affirmations for healing:
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not get angry.
Just for today, I will work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
